Frequently asked questions about our new Orchestra

Orchestra

What level is required for entry?

Anyone aged 7-12 who is learning to play an instrument and can read music is welcome to join the orchestra. Don’t worry, there are no auditions. All we ask is that our members practice, attend rehearsals every week and show 100% dedication to the orchestra. Everyone attending the orchestra rehearsal will be expected to attend their respective instrumental sectional rehearsal.

Which instruments?

We welcome all orchestral instruments including: violins, violas, cellos, double basses, flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, trumpets, horns, trombones, tubas and percussion. If your instrument isn’t listed here, please let us know, as we may be able to direct you to one of Portobello Music School’s ensembles.

Where and when will rehearsals take place?

Rehearsals will take place most Saturdays during school term-term at Towerbank Primary School in Portobello, Edinburgh. Members will attend sectional rehearsals for one hour before joining the main orchestra rehearsal. We are still working out the times but it is likely to be from 12.45pm to 3pm.

What music will we play?

The orchestra will play music from a huge variety of styles including: classical, musicals, jazz, film and TV themes. We’ll also do arrangements of well-known pop and folk music as well as music specially composed for the orchestra.

Will we do concerts?

We hope to do concerts at least once a year while the orchestra is being established but after that we hope to be performing more frequently throughout the year.

What will it cost to be a member of the orchestra?

Membership costs £100 for the year, which works out at less than £3 per week. Families with more than one child in the orchestra will be offered sibling discounts and families on low incomes will be offered a subsidized membership rate.

Who runs the orchestra?

The orchestra is run by Portobello Music School, an organisation formed in 2005 that provides music education to preschool and primary-aged children from across Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Do you need to be a student at Portobello Music School to play in the orchestra?

No, the orchestra is open to anyone learning to play an instrument. Many of our members will past of present students at Portobello Music School but it is not a requirement.

How do I join?

To join, simply ask your parent or guardian to fill out our online registration form and we’ll send you regular updates about when the rehearsals will start.
